Jean saved my laptop from the scrap heap
Let my misfortune be your cautionary tale.
At j-school, we all buy 15-inch MacBook Pros. I also got a neoprene sleeve from Incase. An insidious neoprene sleeve.
The sleeve comes with a large piece of styrofoam, which I left in because it was extra cushion. But hidden inside was a small packet of silica beads. The packet opened and the beads made their way inside the laptop.
All of a sudden my Mac had no sound because a bead was wedged up in the mic input.
I took it immediately to Tekserve. The only other time I’ve been to there was to hear Mike Daisey riff on technology. He said you should treat computers like they are slightly radioactive. Technology is inherently unstable and that’s its beauty.
When you go to Tekserve, you take a number and chill. They hand out free bottles of Coca-Cola. I had to decline, though. I’m a nerd and drink Kombucha.
Customers are chatty. I discussed eco-fashion with a writer. The architect sitting next to me was looking at his AutoCAD. Another customer was dressed in a tux.

A typical Friday night at Tekserve
I watched their endless loop of animated shorts. My favorite was One Rat Short (see below).
After watching it about five times, my number (99) was finally up. I explained what happened and Jean (yes, that is how he spells his name) inspected my laptop. He managed to remove the offending particle. But my computer was damaged. He would have to replace the whole motherboard.
It would cost $695 for parts and $135 for labor. Luckily the warranty covers all.
So look in your sleeves and laptop bags for those little packets. And throw them away. Fast.
