Congressman McMahon on the "Public Option"
Posted on 06. Oct, 2009 by Michael Cohen in Beats, Health and Medicine, Sandeep Junnarkar
Last night at Staten Island’s Town Hall rally meeting on health care reform, Congressman Michael McMahon was asked plainly for a “yes or no” answer as to whether he supports the”public option.” McMahon said that it depends on its relation to the rest of the bill. The crowd booooed McMahon’s answer response. After the event guards kicked out all the press except for NY1, so I cut McMahon off at the back door and asked him to clarify.
I’ll try to post some more video later (with much better lighting) but I’m in class right now.

McMahon has taken no positions on this debate. He is for the public option, but against it. I voted for McMahon in 2008. I will vote for his opponent next year. I want a congressman who actually speaks up and tells me he supports something. He doesnt support anything. I am confident he already made up his mind, but he wont speak it and vote it. Yesterday was the only real townhall he had so far. Before that we had teletownhalls which were stuffed with paid actors or supporters. Not once critical question ever surfaced on those calls. McMahon is a disgrace to the district.

McMahon has made up his mind to support Health Care reform just as he had promised to do before elected. The question remains will he support a public option as required by his base, or will he try to appease the constituents that not only didn’t vote for him, but will not vote for him in 2010. The town Hall was an opportunity for level thinking people to get in front of a microphone and voice their genuine opinions as well as ask the tough questions. The result was that only a handful came to be informed, a handful were already informed, and the rest were itching for a platform to spout their agendas…Mike gave it to them, and they wasted opportunities to ask substantive questions. Even through all of that, McMahon keeps my vote and my confidence.

siny. actually many people came well studied and knew what they were talking about. You seem to have no issues with the fact that McMahon didnt answer a question.

I have no issues, because when a man says that he hasn’t made up his mind, I BELIEVE HIM. When a man says he is coming to listen to our concerns , I BELIEVE HIM. When a man says he will take our feelings and concerns into consideration…guess what? I BELIEVE HIM. SOME people were very well studied and spoken (from the right), some were loons, and some were literally incoherent. UNFORTUNATELY, no one that got up to represent the left was sufficiently knowledgeable, nor passionate about their position….makes me regret not getting up when I had the chance.

watch the video. I think McMahon explains it pretty well. It depends on the rest of the bill (i.e. how it will be payed for).
I think your problem “concerned citizen” is that you oppose health care reform. therefore you want McMahon to vote against it. if that’s the way you feel, that’s fine. stop hiding behind the “he won’t make up his mind” argument.
also, mcMahon didnt answer questions because no one asked them. instead the audience gave long speeches about tort reform and abortion.

we must be seeing a different video mcmahon is talking about him voting based on the proposal. I dont oppose healthcare reform. Does reform require a public option? He was asked directly if he supported a public option. He wouldnt answer!
