Stella D'oro shutdown interrupts rally

Over 50 Stella D’oro workers, local union representatives and other supporters gathered on the steps of City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 8th to protest the closing of the Bronx plant.  But before the rally ended, news came that the factory was shutting down that very afternoon.

Brynwood Partners, the private equity firm that owned Stella D’oro, sold the company to snackfood maker Lance Inc. in September, just months after workers had returned from a nearly year-long strike. Lance Inc. plans to move Stella D’oro to Ohio.

136 workers lost their jobs when the Bronx bakery shut its doors.
