Latin jazz legend Willie Colón celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month at an event hosted by the Department for Housing and Urban Development (HUD), on October 7. The festivities included a buffet featuring Latin American delicacies, a salsa band, an Honor Guard and Colón’s keynote address. Colón, whose grandparents were from Puerto Rico, was born and raised in the Bronx. Aside from his musical career, he is known for his career as a civil servant and community organizer. In his speech, which ranged in scope from North American history to the depiction of Hispanic Americans in Hollywood, he called on established Hispanic American communities to help more recently arrived Hispanic immigrants.
