Art After Dark

The line was over 200 people long on E. 89th St. at the corner of Fifth Ave. last Friday night. The doors were supposed to open at 9 p.m. but 20 minutes later the fancy looking crowd was still patiently waiting outside in the cold. Most of them had started lining up over an hour and a half earlier, and they were excited to go in.

But it was friday, which meant that it was time for Art After Dark: First Fridays at the Guggenheim Museum.

Art After Dark: First Fridays is a program which allows people to come enjoy the expositions at the Guggenheim on Friday evenings, while enjoying drinks and music spun by a live DJ. The admission price is $25 cash only (although it is free for members) and the event lasts from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The center of the museum’s first floor is converted into a bar which offers soda, wine, beer and a special cocktail of vodka and sweet juices.┬áThe lines are not too long thanks to the process they have set up. One buys small orange tickets at the admissions desk, then uses these tickets to buy drinks from one of the half dozen (if not more!) bartenders behind the makeshift bar. If you are curious about the prices, here is how it goes: $3 a ticket, 1 ticket for a soda, 2 tickets for wine or beer and 3 tickets for a cocktail.

Drinks are only allowed on the first floor of the museum, but once people are done with those they are free to roam around the Guggenheim to check out their exposition. And quite an exposition it is!

Kandinsky” has been running from Sept. 18 and will be on view until Jan. 13 2010. Not only was Kandisnky one of the leaders of the abstract movement in painting, but interestingly enough his work actually helped to inspire the creation of the Guggenheim building itself according to the museum’s website. Some of the exhibition’s paintings include “Several Circles (Einige Kreise)”, “Blue World (Monde Bleu)” and “Landscape with Rain (Landschaft mit Regen)”
